News & Events 2010 Sportsmen's Challenge A Fun Day For All The Philmont Rod & Gun Club hosted the 5th Annual Sportsmen's Challenge Feb. 21, 2010. This event can best be described as the "iron man" competition involving aspects of the hunting, shooting and fishing sports.
The event begins at 7:00 AM with participants squirrel hunting for 2 hours on their own. All squirrels harvested are cooked and served at the club's annual wild game dinner. Next each contestant shoots a round of trap followed by target shooting on the club range with .22 rifles from 50 yards. An archery contest then takes place with participants shooting 10 arrows at targets at various distances. Next participants ice fish for 1 hour at the club pond. The events conclude with a casting for accuracy contest by using a spinning outfit to cast a lead weight inside a hula hoop at a distance of 20 yards. If anyone believes that the casting contest is easy just give it a try! Trap co-chairman and club member Doug Cropper and junior participant Jake Simmons were the only ones who had success in this phase of the competition.
Will Montague from Albany and club member Brian Johnson from Philmont (aka the squirrel brothers) showed up with their usual limit of 4 squirrels apiece. In the trap competition club president David Siter and Dale Rowe both shot perfect 25's. David Siter won the .22 competition with a score of 13 followed by Dale Rowe with a score of 12. Chris Lastovicka who is a proficient trap shooter but who never fired a rifle in her life, with a little tutoring from David Siter tied with Brian Johnson for 3rd with a score of 11. All did very well in the archery contest especially Jake Simmons who was deadly accurate with a standard recurve bow. Even Claverack Supervisor Robin Andrews tried her hand at archery and did very well for a first timer. Dale Rowe won the ice fishing contest by catching a huge 4" sunfish and a 5" Bass! As mentioned Doug Cropper and Jake Simmons tied in the casting competition. Bill Morgan from Castleton also participated and did very well as did junior participants Ben Simmons and Micah Weaver.
At the conclusion of the event Dale Rowe won 1st place with a total score of 53. Will Montague and Brian Johnson were tied with a score of 48 each. To determine the 2nd place winner they shot a round of trap and Will was victorious. Brian took the 3rd place trophy. Chefs Joe Kenneally and Julie Veronezi served a delicious breakfast and lunch. This event is usually held during the month of February and plans are already underway for the 2011 competition. All are invited to attend and the date of the next event will be publicized this fall. Come join us for a day to remember. --Dale Rowe |
